A pediatrician is a medical practitioner who is specialized in the field of medicine that includes the medical care for infants and children. The word pediatrician itself has a meaning of ‘healer of children’. It is derived from the two Greek words and gives the meaning of a doctor who deals with the treatment of children’s health.
Pediatrics is widely different from adult medicine in various ways. The small body of a baby obviously has a different physiology from that of an adult. There will be a lot of maturational changes between the adult body and that of an infant. Thus there comes a vast difference in treating a child than that of treating an adult. Children are too young and cannot take decisions on their own. This also adds on to the difference of treating an adult and treating a child. There may arise few issues such as guardianship, privacy and legal responsibility. Thus a pediatrician should make sure that there is a law that an informed consent or a guardian must be informed about every step of treatments. The pediatrists should ensure that they educate the parents about the medical procedures implemented on the child. These issues do not interrupt in case of adults as they have rights to take their own decisions at certain times.
The training of the pediatricians begins with the normal basic medical education like the other medical practitioners that are a high-level course studied at medical schools that results in medical graduation from a university. Perceiving a graduation from a university is that the person is qualified as a medical and is licensed under the laws of that country and hence forth he or she can practice the profession. Pediatricians can take the training for specialization in the field of their choice which may take 4 to 8 years.
Pediatricians are considered to be the members of learned professionals because of their extensive training and also because of their profession’s special ethical and legal issues. They also enjoy a good income and high social status with job security. Pediatricians work for long flexible hours and they are also working at shifts.
