Nursing process is just what it sounds like, the process in which a nurse will provide care to their patients.  The nursing process is supported by nursing models or philosophies which have become from problem solving models as well as deductive theory.  Most nurses are taught the nursing process using an acronym known ad ADPIE.

ADPIE helps a nurse ensure that she does not skip or overlook a part of the nursing process.  Each letter stands for a different action of thought process and when the nurse goes from A to E they will ensure that they give their patient the best possible care.

A:  The A stands for assess.  Basically the nurse is to use her knowledge and skills to determine what the situation is that she is dealing with.

D:  The D stands for diagnose.  The nurse needs to find out what the problem is so that they can use their skills to help the patient most effectively.

P:  The P stands for planning.  In the planning process the nurse will determine how she will find the problem.

I:  The I stands for implementation.  In this stage of care the nurse puts their plan which was created in the previous step into action.

E:  The E in the acronym stands for evaluate.  In this last part of the nursing process the nurse is to evaluate how their treatment worked for the patient.  If the treatment did not work, they start over to create a plan that will work specifically for their patient.

This nursing process ensures that even when a nurse is busy or is flustered by a situation that he or she will be able to provide the care that each and every patient needs.  Of course, the nurse will be conferring with the doctor during the ADPIE nursing process, but this is the basis of every nursing job that allows for consistent and adequate care for each and every patient.
