If you have decided you would like to become a nurse there are still some decisions that you need to make.  There are many different levels of nursing and nursing education for you to consider.  Some jobs may require more advanced education and some do not.  When you begin thinking about the type of nursing that you would like it will help to guide you in choosing the right degree and level of education that will help you get the type of nursing job you want most.

Certificates and Diplomas

There are many fast track certificate and diploma programs offered through hospitals.  These are usually lower level nursing certificates, but they are very fast paced and will allow for you to start working much sooner in a nursing capacity.  You may not be eligible for higher level nursing positions with this type of program.

Associate Degree

Associate degree programs for nursing are often offered at local community colleges.  This type of nursing degree will give you a broad base of knowledge that is spread out over two years and will prepare one for entry level nursing jobs.

Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Science degrees are usually found at four year colleges and universities around the world.  This level of education will allow for a nurse to seek out more advanced nursing positions and opportunities.  When a nurse has this level of education he or she will be more likely to advance to supervisory positions and will be able to demand a higher rate of pay.

Master’s Degree

After getting a Bachelor of Science degree a lot of nurses want to continue their education and get their Master’s degree.  This is a great option for nurses that want to specialize in a certain area or want to get involved in upper management or administration.  Those who would like to teach will usually seek out a master’s degree, as well.

Licensing

All nurses have to be licensed by the state or region that they are in before they are allowed to practice in a medical setting.  A nurse can be licensed at a lower level, such as a licensed vocational nurse or at a higher level, such as a registered nurse.  The license that the nurse obtains will directly correlate to level of education and the test that is taken.
